Your nutrition—How to fast safely.
I thought I switch the topic to one that is really close to my heart—nutrition and tell you how to fast safely. Some of you known me as an avid, very passionate vegan or maybe 100% raw vegan. Some of you know me from my times of hanstanding and kale. During 2009 I uploaded so many videos related to raw vegan that I lost track of them. Many needed to be deleted, many should be deleted today, but they’ve become part of my history.
That’s just a quick background for those of you who know me just as an illustrator and designer.
My dream is to illustrate my favorite raw vegan recipes someday. Maybe this month, maybe next. Would you like that?
Today is my fourth day od fast. I’m lucky to have a very open minded husband, who actually has PhD in clinical nutrition.
We used to follow the work of David Wolfe religiously and — since it was r e l i g i o u s l y— you know it wasn’t smart enough. Even though many people try to smear David Wolfe with bad associations, I wouldn’t be where I am without meeting him, crying in his arms (yep!), going through Sweat Lodges and 8 day water fasts. I wouldn’t do anything differently today, I’m glad I had those experiences. At some point my husband and I “left” the very dogmatic raw vegan movement that was exclusive and simply not healthy. Living on greens is not sufficient in today environment, but it can be an extraordinary way for feasting for longer periods of time.
Today, I’m mostly vegan and mostly raw. I like to have salmon, herring or sardines from time to time. I make sure they’re always wild. I stay away from dairy, although there’s been times in the past, when I knew some dairy was included in the dish. I supplement a lot, focus on greens, seaweed, great tropical oils, honey products. Some people would like to kick my butt for eating bee pollen, honey or propolis, but I grew up on honey. My grandpa was a beekeeper and every time I come home to Poland there are jars of local honey waiting for me. My life is empty without honey and I believe in it’s healing properties. Since I remember, my father welcomes his day with honey-lemon water. He prepares it the day before and drinks it on an empty stomach. I guess it breaks down the sugars, but it’s too soon to turn it into mead. His father was doing the same all his life. He was 89 when he died. Maybe it was honey…
Now about the fast.
I truly believe that no matter what are your habits and daily diet you should fast from time to time. I used to devote one day a week to my water fasts. My Mondays were solid foods free. The fast we’re doing now is based on what’s called Medical Foods that provide super nutrients that support hepatic detoxification processes. Those usually come from Metagenics products. That’s the only company I know of that holds GMP-certified manufacturing certificate, which means if it’s on the label, it’s in the bottle—guaranteed. We mix it with greens, powders and supplements from New Chapter. New Chapter is another company that has high standards of manufacturing. Their whole food supplements are extraordinary. We base our fast on a protocol prepared by Dr Tel-Orien, whose work we follow. The fast is restricting calories, so you’re going to loose weight for sure. The purpose of it is to help you to cope with digestive problems while providing superior nutrition without consuming any solid foods. It works great. I don’t crave any coffee. It’s the third time we’re doing it. Winning!
It’s day fourth, I lost 3 pounds, and I feel really good. We walk an hour every day. I’d like to do this fast more often, maybe every 3 weeks for 5 week days.
I truly believe in healing properties of simple plant based nutritious lifestyle with minimal meat intake, no dairy.
This whole discussion about the newest hit — Primal/Paleo diet — is just another hype. Everyone knows that Atkins diet sucks, and what Primal Diet is is just modified high protein Altkins diet. If I were you, I’d stay away from it. I had some discussion about it on Tom Woods (he’s been hacked so I can’t link to the post, but look for Going Primal). But if you’re curious about the topic, please listen to podcast about Paleo on Compassionate Cook (Colleen Patrick-Goudreau) and listen to the whole piece, even though some will be bored with the whole “let’s treat animals better” talk.
You have to decide on your own what’s best for you. The way to go is to be open to what’s out there and really listen to more educated people and your own gut.
Good luck! 2329S6FJH3BA
