Eddy Music —cuttest ever!

Posted by Marta Spendowska with 1 Comment

So, I love Eddy, her boyishness, her short hair and her So Worth Loving mission. And since I’ve been asked to work digitally lately, I’ve decided to draw this gorgeous beau.

She is such a cutie!

Friday roundup.

Looking Up — recent work.

Ha! It’s Friday and the sun is stubborn. Love the warmth.

First of all, I am honored and happy to be featured in Design For Mankind and Lovelogy. Sweet, brilliant ladies like my work, what else can I ask for! Thank you! I definitely like to be places next to those fantastic Studio Fludd’s necklaces and  the most gorgeous textile wall art.

I’ve been working on some nice patterns and playing with acrylics. Acrylic paint has been with me since few years. Before that I used watercolor extensively, but most of my work is in Poland right now.
Color is the most important in my work. I think it has something to do with me not wearing colorful clothing since approximately 2 years.  During my University times I used to dress up like a Matrioschka and it was quite rediculus. I remember my friend asking me, if everything is fine with me. Now, the same or some Matrioshka colors are taking over my work.

Watercolor is my most used and one of the most difficult mediums. It’s unpredictable and the final outcome might surprise. It’s moody and selfish. I love it for that reason. I almost never  sketch anything. I like to play with it and let it do it’s job. Mess with me. Make me upset.

So that’s the happy game with my work.

Oh! Ever wonder how to make a scratch-off coupons? Well, now you know!

Have a happy weekend!

Painting is a duality and abstract painting is an entirely aesthetic thing. It always remains on one level. It is only really interesting in the beauty of its patterns or its shapes. (Francis Bacon)

Saturday Inspiration

I just finished watching fascinating movie about Bill Cunningham. I feel sad, when I hear those two girls yelling at him :”Don’t take our pictures, I’ll brake your camera”. It’s obvious, that it might look suspicious in todays world. Such a passionate person wearing simple clothes, but obsessing over shoes and women fashion shows.

Lisa is brilliant. I admire her going back to scholl in her 30s and getting the stunning career rolling so quickly. I’m taking her painting class right now and loving the approach.

Christmas is almost here. I hope my hubby sees this post and I’ll find Gemma’s ring on my finger in december.
Or — I’ll skip dickblick for a while…

The Selby — Artists Spaces

Posted by Marta Spendowska with Share Some Thoughts!

The Selby is making me work harder + harder, so I can have a space like one of the below. The colors, the light, the pale wooden floors.

Perfume : Yellow Series.

Posted by Marta Spendowska with Share Some Thoughts!

I’m fascinated by perfume bottles. Usually it’s the light of the bottle that get’s me excited, but it’s hard to capture and I’m so in love with color, that usually I overdo the splashes. I love smelling patchouli and lavender. I use Prada’s Infusion D’Iris (doesn’t last) and Patchouli Arno Sorel Solinotes from Urban Outfitters (smells like obscure medicine).

I draw quickly and with no restrains. It’s my most beloved way of painting.

I split my website.

I just split my website into two hubs : design and illustration. If you’re curious why, read about the reasons behind this decision on PolishLab.

bitting-by-marta spendowska
It’s been busy and I’m a one happy dudette.
I’ve been drawing a bit more for Amelia’s Magazine, creating some more handmade patterns and got contacted by a big, impressive magazine. My fingers are crossed — I hope to illustrate for them.
I also signed up for the awesome painting e-course, Get Your Paint On. I’m not a beginner, but I hoped to meet people, who love painting, bright colors and learn some tricks from Lisa and Matti.
My goal for 2012 is to collaborate more and licence some of my work.

Etsy was out there…calling my name. So I joined again. Few days after setting up my own store, I’ve decided to give it  a try. We’ll see, how it goes. I just started exhibitting with papernstitch, da fantabolous diy website curated by Brittni. You can find some of my work in her gallery.

So, that’s for the updates. Lot’s of good vibes, watercolors, inks and overall joy from creating.

Also, yesterday I started listening to Pema Chödrön Getting Unstuck audiobook. Some of you don’t know, but I took a buddhist refuge few years ago. I’ve been to few events and workshops with Lama Ole. Buddhist teachings are helpful even if you’re  a Christian or Agnostic, or whatever you decided to believe in or not. If you have those tendencies of getting stuck/hooked/obsessed, this audiobook can help. She’s funny and clever. Recommended.

I hope your week is going well and the sun keeps shining!

Nicola Roberts for Amelias Magazine

Fire, red, gorgeously skinny, but not too, best shoes ever, red lipstick, paleness, quirky moves.

Nearly 3 years ago Nicola Roberts with her Girls Aloud won Brit Awards for best single with their “The Promise”.

Since then, Nicole Roberts’ carrier skyrocketed. If you like her and would like to read a bit more about her current affairs, I’d advice you to check out Amelia’s Magazine review.

I was lucky to illustrate Nicola for Amelia.

She’s beautiful. And the lower tones of her voice are so sultry.

Art + Fear.

Posted by Marta Spendowska with Share Some Thoughts!

Art is tough. Art is sweat and daubt.

I’m reading Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking by David Bayles, Ted Orland. I’m reading it slowly, because it’s so so good, I don’t want to finish it.

They say :

Making art now means working in the face of uncertainty ; it means living with doubt and contradiction, doing something no one much cares whether you do, and for which there may be neither audience nor reward.

and :

But if making art gives substance to your sense of self, the corresponding fear is that you’re not up to the task — that you can’t do it, or can’t do it well, or can’t do it again; or that you’re not a real artist, or not a good artist, or have no talent, or have nothing to say. The line between the artist and his / her work is a fine one at best, and for the artist it feels (quite naturally) like there is no such line.

I can relate. Every artist can.

Wnenever I go to the museum or gallery with my dearest hubby, I hear him saying I could do this too. I could draw it. Big deal.

Now stop. Maybe he could recreate it, but could he create it ? Could he imagine it ? Could he translate this imagination into the paper? Could he risk using this vibrant orange I overuse without destroying the painting? Could he decide about the layout? Does he know what composition is?

If you show me, how to sew a dress, I could probably do it sooner or later. But, would it be my dress design?

Art is tough. If I decide to use my other vibrant pigment — pink — and it won’t work, I probably have to forget about the painting and start all over. The writer can delete. With few keystrokes. The copyist has the map prepared for him, so he doesn’t need to take risks. I need to destroy and move forward. It’s scary.

Next time you think that you could do it too, do it. Risk it all. Put on the line the best Arches paper that costs lottsa money, the precious inks that cost even more.

What separates artists from ex-artists is that those who challenge their fears, continue; those who don’t, quit. (…)
Vision is always ahead of execution, knowledge of materials is your contact with reality, and uncertainty is a virtue.
